Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living

Founded in 2006

The vision of the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living is healthy children in a healthy world, with a mission to serve as the state, national, and international leader in the promotion of healthy living for children and their families. We seek to achieve this through prevention and control of childhood obesity through healthy eating and physical activity, promotion of healthy living behaviors in youth, policy and environmental change, and professional education and community service.

A New Vision

Partners for a Healthier Generation

In 2006, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation announced a $50 million gift to The University of Texas System to put Austin at the leading edge of pediatric health research, computer science and the advancement of healthy living in childhood development. This generous gift from the Dell family foundation was given to enable three new, world-class facilities at UT Austin: the Dell Pediatric Research Institute at Dell Children's Medical Center, the Dell Computer Science Hall at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas School of Public Health.

The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, founded in 2006 with part of the gift to The University of Texas System, was recently awarded $3.75 million for another four years of funding from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, extending its funding until 2014. The Center is also funded through grants from federal, state, and local agencies, as well as independent organizations and foundations.

The Center is led by Director Deanna Hoelscher, PhD, RD, LD and Co-Director Steve Kelder, PhD, MPH.

Transforming the lives of children living in urban poverty through better health and education

Inspired by their passion for children and by a shared desire to improve the lives of children living in urban poverty, Michael and Susan Dell established their Austin, Texas-based foundation in 1999. In its early years, the foundation's work focused on improving education and children's health in Central Texas. But within a few short years, our reach expanded, first nationally and then globally. To date, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has committed more than $700 million to assist nonprofit organizations working in major urban communities in the United States, South Africa and India. We focus on opportunities with the greatest potential to directly and measurably transform the lifelong outcomes of impoverished urban children around the globe. Learn more about our programs .
